Introducing Taiwan’s “Whole Grain Mark”: To Revolutionize Whole Grain Food Selection

The Taiwan Grain Industry Association (TGIA) has recently unveiled the "Whole Grain Mark," a revolutionary award designed to streamline the identification of whole grain foods globally. Quaker Oatmeal is the first brand to be rewarded with this verification, marking a significant milestone in the promotion of whole-grain products.

Whole grains are renowned for their rich dietary fiber and beneficial phytonutrients. Phytonutrients, otherwise known as bioactive compounds, are health-promoting compounds that can lower the risk of heart disease, cancer, and other diseases; they include carotenoids and flavonoids (anthocyanins, phenolic acids, polyphenols).

Now, with the “Whole Grain Mark” initiative, selecting these healthful options has never been more straightforward. Consumers can confidently opt for products featuring this mark, ensuring they receive the nutritional benefits of whole grains.

Highlighting the urgency, the TGIA emphasized the prevailing inadequacy of dietary fiber in the Taiwanese population. This initiative aims to address this nutritional gap by encouraging a substantial shift toward whole and unrefined grains.

Following a meticulous three-month review process, the Association officially announced the verification of the initial batch of Whole Grain Marks on December 27, 2023. This move sets the stage for a more accessible and quicker means for people to identify whole grain products starting next year.

Chairperson Lai Xi-mei, spearheading the launch of the “Whole Grain Mark”, emphasized its significance in enabling informed consumer choices. The mark serves as a critical tool for the global promotion of whole-grain foods, receiving enthusiastic responses from numerous manufacturers. Quaker's success in obtaining the "Whole Grain 100" mark for products like Quaker Instant Oatmeal, Quaker Organic Oatmeal, and Quaker Original Flavor Rolled Oats underlines its commitment to 100% whole grain content.

★ Understanding Whole Grain Content: Your Guide to the “Whole Grain Mark” Categories

The movement toward increasing whole grain consumption has gained international momentum. In contrast to refined grains, whole grains preserve the bran and germ, which, despite comprising only 10-20% of the grain, hold crucial nutritional elements. These components include essential nutrients such as Vitamin B complex, Vitamin E, and beneficial polyunsaturated fatty acids. Whole grains are also rich sources of dietary fiber and valuable phytonutrients.

According to data from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the limited awareness and confusion in identifying whole grains have impeded their widespread consumption. As a result, enhancing market understanding and endorsing the “Whole Grain Mark” verification system has emerged as a critical need.

The TGIA, adhering to the Ministry's “Claims and Labeling Principles for Whole Grain Products” and drawing insights from European and American practices, has established a verification standard based on “grams of whole grain per serving.” This standard results in the presentation of the “Whole Grain 100,” “Whole Grain 51+,” or “Containing 25%+ Whole Grain” in numerical forms. These figures respectively signify 100% whole grain, 51% or more, or 25% or more, aiding individuals in self-assessing whether their daily whole grain intake is adequate.

★ Standard Foods’ Quaker Brand Sets the Bar with Three “Whole Grain 100” Verifications

Standard Foods, gearing up for the New Year, made history by being the first major food enterprise in Taiwan to successfully attain the “Whole Grain Mark” Verification before 2023 ended. Notably, their Quaker Instant Oatmeal, Quaker Organic Oatmeal, and Quaker Original Flavor Rolled Oats triumphed, securing top-tier “Whole Grain 100” verification. This achievement reflects their steadfast commitment to promoting whole-grain foods and health-conscious choices.

  • Quaker Instant Oatmeal, recognized as a health food for managing blood lipids and averting body fat accumulation, proudly flaunts the A001001 "Whole Grain 100" verification mark.
  • Quaker Organic Oatmeal boasts raw materials certified by Australia's organic NASAA and processing validated by Taiwan's Cixin Organic TOC, accompanied by the A001002 "Whole Grain 100" verification mark.
  • Likewise, Quaker Original Flavor Rolled Oats, acclaimed for its contribution to blood lipid regulation, parades the A001003 "Whole Grain 100" verification mark.

The TGIA emphasizes the numerous health benefits tied to increased whole grain consumption, supported by an expanding body of scientific research. Notably, whole grain fiber significantly aids in digestive health. Considering inadequate dietary fiber intake across various age groups, particularly among younger individuals, the association urges more companies to participate in the “Whole Grain Mark” verification. Such collective efforts aim to advance healthier dietary practices across all age demographics.
